On 28 March 2025, two powerful earthquakes struck central Myanmar, registering magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4, with the epicentre near Mandalay. Hospitals, schools, religious institutions, and homes have collapsed or been severely damaged. Children, already affected by ongoing conflict and displacement, now face heightened risks from trauma, injury, and loss of shelter. Entire communities have been devastated, with at least 2,700 lives lost, thousands injured, and many more displaced.

This disaster has compounded an already dire humanitarian crisis in Myanmar. In many areas, access to emergency healthcare, clean water, and communication lines has been disrupted, and the national health system is overwhelmed. Vulnerable communities—especially children, women, and the displaced—are in urgent need of coordinated humanitarian support.

Statement on the March 2025 Earthquake in Myanmar

Our work is always based on our four core principles:

  1. We are committed to work with all the people of Myanmar without consideration of race and ethnicity
  2. We trust the aspirations of the people of Myanmar for human dignity, and for freedom, democracy and inclusion, and we work with those who seek to advance this vision for their country
  3. We want to be brave: our small size and the networks we have enable us to respond in agile ways to new circumstances
  4. We want to focus our support on those communities who have been under- served by international grants in the past: we do not seek to replicate what others are doing, but to work in those places that are harder to reach.
